River
Flumen Agalingus
Dniester (MD,UA)
Listen to the story
Flumen Agalingus, a river in the Scythian part of the map, is probably the Dniester in Moldova and Ukraine, yet the Greek writers Herodotus and Strabo knew that river by another name, the Tyras. Where the river really lay is disputed. One explanation takes the name as probably a Bastarnian or East Germanic word for the Tyras. Another sees in it a garbled form of the Axiakes, a river named by the geographer Ptolemy; the Roman writers Pomponius Mela and Pliny even knew a people named after it. If that is right, the entry probably goes back to the first or second century AD.
