River
Flumen Calincius
Listen to the story
Flumen Calincius runs through the map's Indian region, though no modern river has been firmly matched to it. Its name recalls the Calingae, a people the Roman writer Pliny placed west of the Gangaridae, and the Callingon headland he mentions. Yet the towns drawn beside it point north instead, towards Bactria and Sogdiana, so the river was probably a tributary of the Oxus, perhaps the Zeravshan, which waters Samarkand and Bukhara. Its name is split in two, one half written on each bank close to the mouth.
