Flumen Eleuter

Ras Baalbek (Miller) · Nahr el-Kebir (Barrington)

Listen to the story

A bare name, with no drawing at all, marks Flumen Eleuter on the road leading towards Laodicea Scabiosa. The placement is probably a copyist's slip: the name and its distance figure seem to belong to the stretch above, between Orthosia and Demetri. The river itself is the Nahr el-Kebir, which reaches the sea north of Tripoli and closes off the Lebanon range. The Greek geographer Strabo made it the boundary between the Seleucis and Phoenicia with Coele Syria, and the Roman writer Pliny reported turtles there.
