River

Flumen Frigido

Ajdovščina

Listen to the story

In AD 394 the emperor Theodosius defeated the usurper Eugenius on the banks of the Frigidus, and the road station Flumen Frigido stood by that same river, now the Vipava, at Ajdovščina in Slovenia. The name means “at the cold river”, and it probably marked the bridge or the station beside it. The map draws the river as a simple line and writes the station’s name in black to set it apart. A pilgrim’s route from Bordeaux calls the place Castra, “the camp”, noting that the Julian Alps rise from here; it probably belonged to the chain of forts barring the Alpine passes.
