River
Flumen Escus
Isker oder Esker (Miller)
The Isker in Bulgaria, a right-hand tributary of the Danube, is the river the map labels Flumen Escus. In Roman times it ran through the province of Moesia Inferior and met the Danube beside a town that bore the same name as the river. It caught the attention of Greek historians as well as Roman ones. Ancient writers disagreed about its source: the Greek historian Thucydides placed it on Mount Scomius, the Roman writer Pliny in the Rhodope mountains. In fact the river rises on the western slopes of the Haemus, the range now called the Balkan Mountains.
