Listen to the story
The Maritsa, which rises in the Rila mountains of Bulgaria and reaches the Aegean on the border between Greece and Turkey, is the river marked here as Flumen Ebrus. Elsewhere in ancient writing it is always the Hebrus; this plain spoken form without the H survives only on the Tabula. After the Danube it is the longest river of the Balkans, and lighter boats could sail up it as far as Philippopolis, making it a main route into Thrace. Roman poets such as Virgil made it a byword for winter cold. It reaches the sea in two arms, though the map draws only one.
