River
Flumen Crater / Crater Fluvius
Crati
Listen to the story
The Tabula draws the river Flumen Crater entirely the wrong way round: instead of flowing into the Gulf of Taranto, it runs into the Tyrrhenian Sea near Paestum, and its line even sits on the Apennine ridge. Today it is the Crati in Calabria. Its name appears twice, once at the source and once at the mouth, and scholars suspect several rivers were merged into one. Greek settlers from Achaea named it after a river in their homeland, and legend held that its water dyed hair blond. After Croton crushed Sybaris beside it in 510 BC, the victors reportedly turned the river over the ruined city.
