River

Flumen Aveldium

Lama Palombariello [4 · 1]

Listen to the story

The Flumen Aveldium is a river that nobody has quite managed to find. Known only from the Tabula, it rises in a small, isolated group of hills, the Murge Alte, winds along beside the coast and then turns sharply to reach the Adriatic between Barletta and Trani. Yet no real river flows there, only lame, shallow valley channels that carry water during rare, irregular floods, so farmers plant vegetables, vines, olives and figs in their beds. The likeliest candidate is the Lama Palombariello at Trani, perhaps marked for a bridge, or for springs that once ran above ground before vanishing into the limestone.
