River
Flumen Nelurum
Torrente Arzilla? [1]
Listen to the story
Flumen Nelurum is probably the little Torrente Arzilla, which reaches the Adriatic between Pesaro and Fano in the Italian Marche. No other ancient source names this river. The map draws it running down from the mountains in a short, winding line, crossing the Via Flaminia between the station of Pisaurum and the temple picture of Fanum Fortunae. Some scholars preferred smaller streams near Pesaro instead, and one reading of the name is Helurum. Why so modest a stream was marked at all is unclear, perhaps for a bridge carrying the Flaminia, perhaps because it lies right beside Fano's temple.
