River
Flumen Paleris
Pāmbiyār (Barrington)
Listen to the story
The Pambiyar, a river on the west coast of southern India, is probably the Flumen Paleris of the Tabula. The geographer Ptolemy knew it as the Baris, a form that has been linked to the Sanskrit word for water, and described it rising in the Bettigo mountains and reaching the ocean where the coastland of Limyrike ended. It was probably the river of the port of Nelkynda, known from a Greek sailing guide to the Indian Ocean, and its mouth runs out into creeks that can no longer be navigated. The Roman writer Pliny calls it the Prinas.
