River

Flumen Pamisus

Pamisos

Listen to the story

Flumen Pamisus is the Pamisos in the Peloponnese of Greece, the main river of Messenia and the most abundant year-round river of the whole peninsula, navigable by boat just before its mouth. The map, however, places it far to the east, where one would expect the Eurotas. Scholars suspect a crowded, hard-to-read source shared with the list of places compiled in Ravenna, which garbles the same name into Pictis. A second, smaller river of the same name in Messenia may have added to the confusion. At its springs stood a sanctuary with a small temple of the sixth century BC.
