River

Fl. Pirum

Listen to the story

Fluvius Pirum is a name the map itself never gives: the river flows across it without a label, springing from an unnamed mountain. Scholars borrowed the name from the road station Ad Pirum, meaning 'at the pear tree'. The stream is usually identified with the Fonta Pirro, a small tributary of the Ofanto in southern Italy, though it remains uncertain whether it should carry this name at all.
