River
? [fl. Ophius] oder [fl. Hyssus] ?
? Istala Dere oder Karadere
Listen to the story
A river without a name crosses this stretch of the map, and it is probably either the Ophius or the Hyssus, two streams that flow from the south into the Black Sea on the coast of Turkey, today probably the Istala Dere or the Karadere. The map cannot show that direction, because its draughtsman, short of space, folded the whole coast beyond Trapezus sideways, so it runs eastward beside the northern ocean. Nearby stations support both readings: one bears the Ophius's name, and another's garbled name hides the Greek for 'harbour of the Hyssus'.
