River

Fl. Pediaeus

Listen to the story

The Pediaeus was the chief river of Cyprus, flowing out to the east between Citium and Salamis, and it was also known as the Aous; the modern river is called the Pidias. The geographer Ptolemy knew it under its Greek name. The map leaves this river unnamed, and it draws a line that makes no sense: the stream runs from one shore to the other and so has no source. Perhaps only the right-hand stretch was original, the Pediaeus or possibly the Barbaros, and the copyist later drew it further to the left.
