Puteolis

Pozzuoli

Listen to the story

Puteoli, now Pozzuoli on the Bay of Naples, owed its name to its wells, according to the Roman scholar Varro. It began as the Greek harbour town of Dikaiarcheia, probably founded by nearby Cumae, and became a Roman colony in 194 BC. Its busy port, sheltered by a mole reaching far into the sea, was vital for Rome's grain supply, and the emperor Hadrian was buried in Cicero's villa here. On the map every road line around the town is missing, though the distance figures survive, and the way to Naples runs past a unique unnamed symbol, probably a tunnel through the hills.
