Priferno

bei Bazzano [2]

Listen to the story

Priferno lay near Bazzano in central Italy, though no remains of it have been found and its exact site is still unknown. The copyist drew it with a pair of towers, a symbol normally kept for places of some weight, and here it seems to have no explanation. Older research took the drawing at its word and looked for an important town, even at Assergi by the Gran Sasso, where Christian catacombs came to light; later research sees this as reading too much into the picture. A side road towards Amiternum branched off here, and the only other ancient mention, as Prefernum in a list of places compiled in Ravenna, suggests the entry dates from late antiquity.
