Listen to the story
Porolissum, drawn on the Tabula with the familiar pair of towers, marks the point where the Roman road through Dacia runs out, at Moigrad-Jac in Romania. Roman troops held it from the reign of Trajan, and its strategic position made it a major military base with two forts. It became the trading and administrative centre of a province that took its name, Dacia Porolissensis, founded in AD 124. Septimius Severus raised the civilian settlement to a municipium, a self-governing town. The garrison included archers from Palmyra and a cohort of Britons, and an amphitheatre and a temple of Liber Pater still survive.
