Portus Senia

Listen to the story
Out in the painted sea, just below the small city drawing of Senia, the map adds a separate label: Portus Senia. The town is Senj in Croatia, and its port was the most important on the north-eastern stretch of the Adriatic, which is why the map singles it out. Even so, scholars remain puzzled by the double entry. The open water towards the island of Curicta hardly fits, since the mapmaker sets that island far away. Roman Senia was a customs station, and in the second and third centuries settlers came from the East, among them a Jew from Tiberias and a Greek from Nicomedia.
