Praetorium Agrippinae
Valkenburg (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Praetorium Agrippinae, Agrippina's praetorium, was a military station on the Rhine frontier, and a praetorium was the headquarters building of a Roman commander. It lies at Valkenburg, near Leiden in the Netherlands, on the road that ran along the Old Rhine from Nijmegen to Leiden. The map gives it a large square wall around a spacious courtyard, with a gate between two projecting corner towers. Earlier attempts to place it at Voorburg failed, because the position did not match the map and the finds there begin too late. Excavations at Valkenburg revealed six successive forts, the first built under the emperor Claudius. This western stretch of the frontier was abandoned around AD 240.
