Ptolomaide
Akko
Ptolemais lay where the harbour town of Akko stands in Israel now, a place known as Ake long before Greek rule. It was probably enlarged and renamed after Ptolemy, son of Lagus, founder of Egypt's Greek dynasty. The Persians used it as their base against Egypt, and once Tyre and Sidon had declined it grew into a great, flourishing port, a Roman colony from the reign of Claudius, as the Roman writer Pliny notes. On the map, to keep the lettering off the sea, the end of the name is squeezed into a tiny peninsula above it. The crusaders later called the city Saint-Jean d'Acre.
