Caporcotani

Kafr Kût (Miller) · Lejjun (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Caporcotani stood on the road between Caesarea and Scythopolis, twenty-eight Roman miles from the first and twenty-four from the second. The geographer Ptolemy knew it as Caparcotia. Scholars disagree about where it lay. Older research placed it at Kafr Kût, while later research equates it with Lejjun in Israel, the site of Legio, a camp of a Roman legion whose name survives in the Arabic one. In late antiquity the town was called Maximianopolis, and under that name it turns up on a pilgrim's route from Bordeaux.
