City
Carsania
settlement on E coast of India? (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Carsania lies far out among the map's Indian lands, and where exactly it stood is anyone's guess. A list of places compiled in Ravenna knows it as Carsamir, a small town. Older research equated it with Kaspapyros, the city where the explorer Skylax set off down the Indus with the fleet of the Persian king Darius the First, somewhere near the meeting of the Kabul river and the Indus. A site on the east coast of India has also been proposed, but it hardly fits the map. More likely the town lay in the mountains between eastern Iran, India and Central Asia, perhaps in Sogdiana, yet every proposal remains speculative.
