Castello Firmani
S. Maria a Mare [Pleiades] · Porto San Giorgo [3]
Listen to the story
Castello Firmani means the stronghold of Firmum, and it served as the harbour of that hill town, today's Fermo, which lay about eight kilometres inland from the Adriatic. The Greek geographer Strabo calls the Castellum simply the port of Firmum, and the Roman writer Pliny lists it too. It probably lay at Porto San Giorgio in Italy. The map gives it the usual pair of towers, as if it were a proper town, yet the harbour seems never to have held city rights of its own.
