Castro Novo

Torre Chiaruccia

Listen to the story

At Castro Novo the map's road line goes astray: it runs on through Aquae Apollinares, whose picture has slipped so far down that the station looks like a crossroads, although the road really led straight on to Punicum. The name means 'new fort', and the place was a Roman colony on the coast of southern Etruria beside the Via Aurelia, today Torre Chiaruccia near Civitavecchia in Italy. In 191 BC the Roman Senate refused its plea to be spared naval service. Caesar probably refounded it, and in the early fifth century the Roman poet Rutilius Namatianus found it half in ruins.
