Gravisca

Porto Clementino

Listen to the story

Gravisca, the harbour of Etruscan Tarquinii at Porto Clementino, got its name, so Cato the Elder claimed, from its heavy air, for the marshy coast bred fever. Long before the Roman colony of 181 BC, Greek traders kept a sanctuary here with offerings to Hera, Aphrodite and Apollo, among them a stone anchor dedicated by Sostratos of Aegina, a merchant whose huge profits the Greek historian Herodotus mentions. The town was known for wine and red coral.
