Grinnibus

Rossum

Grinnibvs is Grinnes, today Rossum on the Maas in the Netherlands. The Roman historian Tacitus names it as a camp of infantry cohorts and cavalry that the rebel Julius Civilis attacked in 70, during the revolt of the Batavians, and says the victorious Romans then built a fort there. Many roof tiles with military stamps, and coins from the late Republic onward, have been found at Rossum, and bronze coins of Constantine and his sons show the place was still in use in the fourth century, but the fort itself has not been located. On the map the distance figure after the name is damaged.
