Hadria

Atri

Listen to the story

Hadria, now Atri, on a hill a short way inland from the Adriatic, was the home town of the family of the emperor Hadrian, whose name comes from it, and he later paid for restorations here. Rome founded a Latin colony at Hadria around 289 BC, which struck its own coins marked with the older name Hatria. Its amphorae were famous, and a Roman cistern in the old bath quarter now forms the crypt of the cathedral.
