Halisso

Kandila · Κανδήλα

Halisso is Alyzia in Acarnania, in Greece, near Kandila; on the map only the letters Haliss can still be read. The town, named in legend after Alyzeus, a son of Icarius, stood a little inland from its harbour, where a sanctuary of Heracles once held Lysippus's statues of the hero's labours, until a Roman general carried them off to Rome. In 375 BC the Athenian admiral Timotheus set up a trophy here after defeating the Spartan fleet, and Cicero stopped here on his journeys. Under the empire the town came under Nicopolis.
