Hale

Tusa

Listen to the story

Halesa, Halaesa to the Romans, lay on a hill near Tusa, a short way from the sea. It was founded in 403 BC by Archonides, a Sicel prince, for his Greek mercenaries, and so called Halaesa Archonidea. Under Rome it was a free city exempt from taxes, and a long Greek inscription found there sets out the boundaries of public land to be leased, plot by plot. Its ruins lie beside the little church of Santa Maria delle Palate.
