Gesogiaco quod nunc Bononia

Boulogne-sur-mer

Gesogiaco quod nunc Bononia, Gesoriacum which is now Bononia, is today Boulogne-sur-Mer in France, and the map records the change of name, something it does elsewhere only for Jerusalem. Gesoriacum was the home port of the Roman fleet of Britain and the main crossing point to the island, and the emperor Caligula gave it a lighthouse. After its destruction around 270 the town was refounded within the old fort, and from the early fourth century it went by the name Bononia. So this entry must come from a late stage of the map.
