Geronum

Gerione

Listen to the story

Geronum is Gerunium, a small town in Apulia near the river Fortore that Hannibal seized in 217 BC and made his winter quarters. According to the Greek historian Polybius he killed its people and used the town to store grain, while the Roman historian Livy says its walls were simply too weak to defend. Nearby the Roman commander Minucius clashed with Hannibal and had to be rescued by Fabius. Afterwards the town sank into ruin.
