Castro Novo

Giulianova

Listen to the story

Ancient historians disagree over when Castrum Novum was founded: the summary of Livy's history groups this coastal colony with Sena and Hadria, between 290 and 286 BC, while Velleius Paterculus sets it at the start of the First Punic War, in 264 BC. The name simply means 'new fort'. The town lay at the mouth of the river Tordino, where Giulianova now stands on the Adriatic coast of Picenum, and it was still called a colony under the emperors. Just beyond it the map goes astray, because the copyist let the inland town of Pinna slip into the coastal road.
