City

Caulon

Monasterace Marina (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Caulon was a Greek city long before Rome, an Achaean colony founded late in the eighth century BC on the coast of Bruttium, near Monasterace Marina in Calabria. It lived largely from the timber trade, was besieged and destroyed by Dionysius of Syracuse in 387 BC, rebuilt, and finally abandoned after the Romans took it in 205 BC, during the Second Punic War. By the time of the Roman writer Pliny only traces of the town remained, yet the map still marks it as a town. Its figure of thirty Roman miles from Scilacium seems to have slipped out of place.
