Castello Menapiorum
Cassel
Listen to the story
Castellum Menapiorum, the fort of the Menapii, is today Cassel in the French département of Nord, on the road that ran from Tongeren through Tournai to Boulogne. The geographer Ptolemy also names Castellum as the chief town of the Menapii, a people who traded in salt and sold hams praised by the Roman poet Martial. Yet Cassel lay in the land of the neighbouring Morini, so older research took the name for a slip and read fort of the Morini instead; perhaps the Menapii simply spread further west in later times. Only scanty remains survive, for the town was abandoned in late antiquity.
