Catania

Listen to the story

Catina, today's Catania in Sicily, is one of those places the map draws but never names: a pair of towers stands on the coast road with no label beside it, and the name has been supplied by scholars. The city began as the Greek colony of Katane, founded around 730 BC, and the early Greek geographer Hecataeus placed it simply, with Mount Etna rising above. Roman Catina had a theatre, an amphitheatre and baths. On the map, the road line that should link it onwards to Messana is missing.
