Caspiae
Kaspi
Listen to the story
Caspiae is placed today at the town of Kaspi in Georgia, though where the station really lay has long been debated. The name echoes the Caspii, the people who gave the Caspian Sea its name and who, according to the Greek geographer Strabo, let their old folk starve to death. It also recalls the famous mountain passes called the Caspian Gates, yet this station probably has nothing to do with either. One proposal set it at Ardahan on the Kura, the gateway into the Caucasian kingdom of Iberia from the Black Sea; another linked it to a place called Chospia.
