Punicum
La Marinella
Listen to the story
At Santa Marinella on the coast of Lazio, near the Odescalchi castle, lay the station of Punicum on the Via Aurelia. Its name was long taken as a sign of a Phoenician foundation, but punicum is Latin for pomegranate, and the stop was probably marked by a pomegranate tree, much as another inn on the map was named after a pear tree. Nearby stood a grand seaside villa with its own harbour, whose inscribed water pipes have been linked to the famous jurist Ulpian.
