Pylios

S Petrochorion · Πετροχώρι

Pylios is Pylos, the rocky headland of Koryphasion near Petrochori in Greece, at the edge of the bay of Navarino. It served as the port of the Mycenaean palace that its excavators identified as the palace of Nestor, whose archive of clay tablets helped to decipher the Linear B script. In 425 BC the Athenians fortified the cape and, after a siege of seventy-two days, captured one hundred and twenty Spartans on the island of Sphacteria. Under the emperors the town still claimed to show Nestor's house and tomb. The map's figure of thirty miles on to Mothone should probably be twenty.
