Pyrgos

Santa Severa

Listen to the story

Three thin sheets of gold, found between two temples here, are among the most famous inscriptions of ancient Italy: two are written in Etruscan and one in Phoenician, and all record a dedication to the goddess the Etruscans called Uni and the Phoenicians Astarte. The place is Pyrgos, Pyrgi, the towers, at Santa Severa, the busiest harbour of the Etruscan city of Caere, and Greek writers knew its rich sanctuary too.
