Pyreo

Piräus · Πειραιάς

Pyreo is the Piraeus, the harbour of Athens, but the map hardly knows it as one: it stands inland to the right of Athens, with no harbour mark and no road line, only a figure of five miles. That may reflect a late model, long after Sulla sacked the port in 87 BC. Themistocles had fortified it as the base of the Athenian fleet, and even in 322 AD Constantine gathered a great imperial fleet here. The name itself has been traced to a Greek word for a ferryman.
