Pretorio

Pontarion?

At Pretorio the road forks right from the start, and unusually the name is written along the lower branch rather than the upper. The branch towards Argenton also shows a brief upward kink, as if the copyist had first meant to head for Poitiers. Where the station lay is very uncertain: the distances point to Laurière, while the remains of a Roman bridge over the Thaurion speak for Pontarion. A milestone from Moutier-d'Ahun counts twenty to Pretorio and thirty-four to Limoges. The name comes from praetorium, an official residence on the road.
