Praetorium Laverianum Nuceriae Apulae
Montaratro (Barrington) · Lucera (Miller)
Listen to the story
Praetorium Laverianum Nuceriae Apulae is a long label naming an official lodging beside the Apulian town of Luceria, modern Lucera, whose name the map garbles into Nuceria. A praetorium housed officials and dignitaries on their travels. The map gives it a large rectangular building, rich in colour and architectural detail and without a close match elsewhere, while the town itself gets no picture at all. Laverianum is probably a slip for Lucerianum, of Luceria, though it may recall a private estate. Where the building stood is disputed, from Montaratro to a hilltop about nine Roman miles from Arpi.
