Road station
Praesidium
Listen to the story
Where this Praesidium lay in Mauretania, in present-day Algeria, is unknown: its road on the map simply begins here, with no stretch leading to it, and runs fifty Roman miles to the salt works of Salinae Nubonenses. The name, meaning a garrison post, was common for small military stations pushed forward against raids from beyond the frontier, and a bishop recorded in 411 AD may belong to one of them. Only part of the name is still legible.
