Populonio, the Etruscan Pupluna, now the ruins of Populonia on the headland of Piombino opposite Elba, was the only large Etruscan city on the sea. Iron ore from Elba was smelted here, tuna fishing flourished, and the harbour in the bay of Baratti had shipyards and warehouses. The city itself was ruined in Rome's civil wars, and afterwards only the harbour still mattered.
