Ponte Sonti

Mainizza?

Listen to the story

Ponte Sonti is the bridge over the Isonzo, the ancient Sontius, at Mainizza on the road from Aquileia to Emona. In 238 AD, as the Greek historian Herodian tells, the people of Aquileia broke down this great stone bridge, built by earlier emperors on tapering piers, to halt the advancing emperor Maximinus Thrax. Here too in 489 Theoderic the Great defeated Odoacer on his way into Italy. The map's form of the name comes from running together Ponte Aesontii.
