Ponte Dubris

settlement and bridge at Pontoux

Ponte Dubris, the bridge over the Doubs, is Pontoux-sur-le-Doubs, shortly before the Doubs joins the Saône, the first station on the road from Chalon to Besançon. The foundations of the Roman bridge have been located, and the river has yielded finds reaching back to prehistory, above all weapons of the Burgundian and Merovingian periods, signs of fighting here in the seventh and eighth centuries. On the map the name is split in two: for lack of space, Ponte stands at the end of the previous stretch, far from Dubris.
