Pontes caldis

Escautpont

Pontes Caldis is a copyist's slip for Ponte Scaldis, At the Scheldt Bridge: the S of Scaldis has been attached to the word before, turning one bridge into several and the river into something warm. The station lay where the road from Tournai to Bavay crossed the Scheldt, the border between the Menapii and the Nervii, and the village there is still called Escautpont, Scheldt bridge, in the north of France. In the Middle Ages a toll was still levied at the bridge.
