Ponte Drusi

Bozen (AK) · Bolzano? (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Pons Drusi, the bridge of Drusus, is named after Augustus's stepson, who conquered the Alps in 15 BC, and it lay near Bolzano, where the roads over the Brenner and the Reschen pass part. Only this map records the name, which dates the entry to the early empire at the latest. The bridge implies a river, the Eisack or the Adige, yet the map draws none here, and it lets the Alpine provinces reach down to this very point.
