Ponte Saravi

Sarrebourg · Saarburg

Ponte Saravi, the bridge over the Saar, is Sarrebourg, where the road from Metz to Strasbourg crossed the river in the land of the Mediomatrici. The core of the settlement was probably a small fort guarding the bridge, found on the right bank of the Saar inside the later town walls. The Roman register of routes garbles the name as Ponte Sarvix. The Saar itself rises on the Donon in the Vosges, and the poet Ausonius calls it winding in his poem on the Moselle.
