Porsulis

3 miles W Komotine

Porsulis, west of today's Komotini, was a village and station on the Via Egnatia; the Roman register of routes already notes that it is now called Maximianopolis, and the Byzantines turned that into Mosynopolis. In the plain its ruins keep a rectangle of walls about 400 by 730 metres, up to 4 metres thick, with square towers, an early Christian cemetery and a bishop's church of the 5th century. Its bishops attended the councils of 431 and 451, and Justinian restored its walls. A soldier's discharge certificate from the reign of Vespasian has also been found.
